No — when you hike with Kirks Mountain Adventures, you do not need a timed entry permit to enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Kirks is a permitted commercial guide in RMNP, and the National Park Service exempts Commercial Use Authorization holders, Special Use Permit holders, concessioners and commercial tours from the timed entry reservation system. Timed entry reservations are required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily from May 22 through October 12, 2026, and from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. for the Bear Lake Road Corridor from May 22 through October 18, 2026 — but our guided guests skip that step entirely. You will, however, still need a valid park entrance pass per vehicle (see the next question).

Yes. The timed entry permit and the park entrance pass are two different things. Your guided hike with Kirks covers the timed entry requirement, but every vehicle entering Rocky Mountain National Park still needs a valid park pass or daily entrance fee. You can purchase one at the entrance station, online in advance, or use an America the Beautiful annual pass.

Every guided day hike includes a certified RMNP-permitted guide, a filling trail lunch (on 6-hour and 8-hour hikes), and all the time-saving extras that come with going guided — no timed entry permit hassle, no scrambling for parking at Bear Lake, and a local who knows where the views are best and the crowds are thinnest. Discounted family group rates are available, and you can add a pack llama for an additional fee.

Bring layers (mountain weather changes fast), sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes or boots, a water bottle or hydration bladder, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a small daypack. We provide the trail lunch on longer hikes and the guide carries first aid and emergency supplies, but you should pack any personal medications, a rain shell, and a camera. If you don't have gear, ask us — equipment rentals are available.

Meet at the Kirks Mountain Adventures shop at 230 E. Elkhorn Ave. in downtown Estes Park (across from City Hall, next to Dairy Queen) about 15 minutes before your scheduled hike. You can park in town — and because Kirks handles the trailhead drive, you avoid the Bear Lake parking lot, which routinely fills before 7 a.m. in summer.

Your guide selects the trail based on your group's fitness, the season, the weather, and current trail conditions — but here's a rough guide:

3-hour hikes typically cover shorter alpine destinations like Bear Lake, Sprague Lake, Nymph Lake, or Alberta Falls — 1 to 3 miles round trip with modest elevation gain.
6-hour hikes open up classics like Dream Lake, Emerald Lake, Mills Lake, or Cub Lake — roughly 2.2 miles to Dream Lake with 503 ft of gain, or about 3.4 miles round trip to Emerald Lake. Estes ParkEstes Park
8-hour hikes are for ambitious groups headed to spots like Sky Pond, Black Lake, Flat Top Mountain, or Hallett Peak — longer mileage, real elevation gain, and bigger payoffs.

Our hikes are scaled to your group. We guide guests from age 5 to 75+ and from sea level to seasoned mountaineers. The honest caveat: altitude makes everything feel harder than it looks on paper. Estes Park trails start at 7,500 feet, and it can take a few days to fully acclimatize. If you're flying in from sea level, plan to arrive a day or two early, hydrate aggressively, and skip the alcohol the night before. Your guide will set a pace that works for the slowest person in the group — the goal is for everyone to have fun, not to suffer.

Yes. We regularly guide families with kids as young as 5, and our guides are excellent at keeping younger hikers engaged — pointing out wildlife, telling stories about the park, and choosing distance and difficulty to match small legs. The 3-hour hike is the most popular option for families with kids under 10. If you add a llama, kids love it; small children can even ride.

We hike rain, snow, or shine — Colorado weather is part of the experience. The exception is lightning. Afternoon thundershowers with lightning are common in summer, which is why your guide will plan to have you off exposed terrain (ridgelines, alpine lakes above treeline) by early afternoon. If conditions become genuinely unsafe, your guide will reroute the hike or shorten it. We do not cancel for rain, so come prepared with a rain shell and layers.

Often, yes — though wildlife is never guaranteed. Common sightings on our trails include elk, mule deer, marmots, pika, chipmunks, and Steller's jays. Less common but possible: moose (especially near Cub Lake, Sprague Lake, and the Kawuneeche Valley), bighorn sheep, black bears, and bald eagles. Fall is prime elk season — bull elk bugling during the rut in September and early October is a Rocky Mountain bucket-list experience. Your guide will spot wildlife you'd walk right past on your own.

Yes. Summer (June–September) is peak alpine lake season, fall (September–October) brings golden aspens and elk bugling, and winter (November–April) transitions us into snowshoeing trips on the same trails. Spring shoulder season can require microspikes on shaded trails — your guide brings the right traction.

For an additional fee, you can add a friendly pack llama to any day hike. The llama carries gear, lunch, and water — and on flatter terrain, small kids can take a turn riding. Llamas are surefooted, calm, and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser on the trail. Each llama can carry up to 60 lbs. Add a llama when you book, and let us know if any kids in your group want to ride.

Not noticeably. Llamas hike at a comfortable human pace and actually take pressure off your back, freeing you up to enjoy the scenery (and take better photos). On steeper or more technical terrain, your guide will choose a llama-appropriate route.

All Kirks guided day hikes are private — just your party and your guide. That's why per-person pricing drops as your group grows: a 3-hour hike is $195 for one guest or $145 per person for a group, a 6-hour hike is $250 for one or $180 per person, and an 8-hour hike is $290 for one or $199 per person. Family-friendly discounts are available — just ask when booking.

Three big differences. First, logistics: no timed entry permit to chase on Recreation.gov, no 5 a.m. wake-up to fight for a Bear Lake parking spot, no map app on shaky cell service. Second, the trail itself: your guide knows where the wildlife actually shows up, which lakes have the best light at which hour, and which "off-the-radar" spots dodge the Insta-crowd. Third, safety and comfort: altitude, weather, and wildlife are all things you don't have to think about — your guide handles it. Most guests tell us the guided hike was the best day of their RMNP trip.
